Fans of the BBC crime drama Ludwig have been given an update on the second series, which is set to air on BBC One following the success of its first series in 2024.
David Mitchell Returns as Ludwig
Actor David Mitchell will reprise his role as John 'Ludwig' Taylor, alongside Anna Maxwell Martin as his sister-in-law, Lucy. The series follows John, an awkward, reclusive puzzler who takes on the identity of his detective twin brother, James, who has disappeared in Cambridge. Adamant about solving the mystery, he tries to keep his true identity hidden.
A synopsis for the second series reads: "Picking up from the end of series one, master puzzle-setter John 'Ludwig' Taylor (David Mitchell) is now a Crime Scene Consultant, working alongside DCI Russell Carter (Dipo Ola), on 'impossible' crimes for the Cambridge Police Authority. No longer having to masquerade as his brother, he's openly more 'Ludwig' than ever - brilliant at solving puzzles but hopeless at everything else. But John’s identical twin brother, James, is still missing, and now that he’s an official employee of the station, John is forbidden from using any police resources to look for his brother or uncover exactly what he was investigating."
New Characters and Cast
Ludwig creator Mark Brotherhood spoke to Radio Times about what fans can expect, detailing new faces joining the show. Characters DC Ethan Cole (Ben Ashenden) and DC Caitlin Sullivan (Rumi Sutton) are new additions to the force, who are unaware of the switch between John and James. Brotherhood commented: "The mystery remains. His brother is still missing. Lucy still needs his help, and he's still actively looking for him without telling the police."
Also set to star are Line of Duty actor Mark Bonnar as a newspaper editor and Fleabag's Sian Clifford as a politician.
One Actor Not Returning
Actor Gerran Howell, who became a hit in the American medical drama The Pitt, will not appear in the upcoming series. However, he hasn't ruled out a return, telling Radio Times: "I hope the door is still open, because I really love that show."
A release date for series two of Ludwig has not yet been announced. Meanwhile, series one is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
