Love Island Secrets: Day Off, Hidden Condoms, and Unseen Rows

As Love Island prepares to return for its 2022 series, former contestants have lifted the lid on some of the show's best-kept production secrets. From secret days off to hidden condoms and unseen arguments, the popular ITV reality series has more going on behind the scenes than viewers might suspect.

Kem Cetinay, a series three contestant, revealed that cast members get a day off every Saturday, allowing them to head to the beach. However, strict rules apply: they must remove their microphones and are forbidden from discussing anything related to the show. 'You're being watched by an evil hawk, by the producers,' he said, explaining that conversations are limited to home life.

Series seven star Hugo Hammond disclosed that lunch and dinner are cooked for the islanders, though the menu can become repetitive. 'We had a lot of chicken and fish,' he said, adding that contestants wash their own dishes. Breakfast is self-service. Additionally, around 200 condoms are hidden throughout the villa, ensuring they are always accessible to cast members.

Timekeeping is a challenge inside the villa, as there are no clocks. Series six winner Paige Turley said they tried to estimate the time by the sun, while Finn Tapp revealed they spotted the digital time on the oven. 'We'd look up to the sky and say, 'The sun's there. I bet it's about 11:43am',' he recalled, surprising producers with their accuracy.

Amber Gill, winner of series five, opened up about an unseen major bust-up with Greg O'Shea just days before their victory. 'Me and Greg had the biggest bust-up you could ever imagine,' she said, adding that they were separated before deciding to reconcile. She also detailed the show's aftercare, which includes a therapy session before appearing, access to welfare team during filming, and a 14-18 week therapy programme post-show.
