Love Island has reintroduced former contestant Adam Collard to its Mallorcan villa, four years after he left under accusations of gaslighting and emotional abuse. The move marks a significant shift for the ITV dating show, which has traditionally avoided acknowledging the cameras or the wider world beyond the villa.
Collard's re-entry immediately caused tensions among contestants, who recognised him from his 33-day stint in 2018. While some commentators see this as a gamble, others believe it signals a growing self-awareness in a programme that is increasingly dealing with its own legacy. Lauren O'Neill, co-author of Vice UK's weekly Love Island Power Ranking, said: 'This feels like the first year when the show has properly acknowledged itself as a legacy property.'
The fourth wall – the invisible barrier between reality stars and their audience – was first tested last year when Liberty Poole began to suspect her then-boyfriend Jake Cornish was more concerned with being on a TV show than finding love. Now, Collard's arrival has bulldozed through it entirely. O'Neill welcomed the development, arguing that viewers have often felt patronised when the show downplayed wider issues.
However, Women's Aid has expressed concern about Collard's return. A spokesperson said: 'In the 2018 series, we saw Rosie rightly call out Adam for his unacceptable behaviour, which included gaslighting and emotional abuse. We hope that ITV recognise how serious this issue is and that it must be learned from.'
The move mirrors trends in other reality shows, such as Bravo's Real Housewives franchise, which benefited from acknowledging tabloid leaks as part of the storyline. But there are risks, as seen with Big Brother, whose decline was accelerated by producer-engineered moments that led to Ofcom complaints. Whether Love Island's new twist pays off remains to be seen, but it opens the door to more former contestants returning in the future.
