Lorraine Kelly made an emotional return to her ITV morning show, thanking her colleagues for their unwavering support following the sudden death of her father.
An Emotional Return to the Screen
The 66-year-old presenter was back on air on Monday 19 January 2026, after taking time off following the unexpected passing of her father, John Kelly, earlier in the month. As the programme began, Kelly was joined by the show's resident GP, Dr Amir Khan, who expressed that the entire ITV team had been concerned for her wellbeing.
Kelly, who was temporarily replaced by Christine Lampard during her absence, addressed viewers directly. "I'm OK and I'll tell you what, everybody's messages and cards… You've all been so kind," she said. "Everyone here, of course, because it is like a family, has been amazing."
Coping With a Sudden Loss
Speaking about how she has been coping with the loss, the Scottish TV star added: "You just have to go through the process, anyone who has been there knows the process. You see the real kindness in people and that's been lovely. Small steps and we'll get there."
Kelly first shared the sad news with her fans in an Instagram post on Saturday 10 January. Alongside a photograph of herself and her father smiling at each other, she wrote a heartfelt tribute.
"Very sad news. My dad has died," she stated. "I am mourning the man who bought me a telescope when I was five years old, who watched the moon landings with me and taught me to always be curious and interested in everything."
She confirmed her father had been in poor health, but said his death was still "a shock." Kelly asked for privacy for her family, particularly her mother Anne, as they grieve.
Tributes Pour In for John Kelly
John Kelly, who was in his eighties, died after slipping on an icy path in his hometown of East Kilbride, Scotland. The tragic accident prompted an outpouring of support from colleagues, friends, and fans.
ITV paid its own tribute during Kelly's absence. Stand-in presenter Christine Lampard told viewers: "It goes without saying that we are all sending our thoughts and prayers to Lorraine and her family, especially to her mum Anne."
Condolences also flooded in from fellow celebrities on social media:
- TV chef Nigella Lawson wrote: "I'm so sorry for your loss, and tremendous pain. Sending so much love."
- Singer Craig David commented: "Sending my love to you and the family Lorraine. He was always your angel and will continue to be that for you watching from heaven."
- Former Hear'Say singer Myleene Klass added: "I'm so sorry Lorraine. My love to you and the family x."
Lorraine Kelly's return to her eponymous show marks a poignant step forward as she and her family, including her brother Graham, navigate their loss with the support of her television 'family' and the public.
