Gabby Logan issued a light-hearted warning to Micah Richards during the BBC's World Cup final coverage after the former Manchester City defender joined Gary Lineker in teasing the broadcaster for basing most of its coverage in Salford.
On-Site but Studio-Bound
Despite being at the New York/New Jersey Stadium for the Spain vs. Argentina final, Logan, Richards, Wayne Rooney, and Joe Hart have spent the majority of the tournament working from a UK studio. The BBC's decision to remain in Salford has been mocked compared to ITV's New York base, and even some of the broadcaster's own pundits have grown frustrated.
The Salford Jibe
The contentious subject arose as discussion turned to the tournament's standout moments. Logan pointed out that none of her colleagues had mentioned the supporters, particularly Norway's Viking displays. Richards seized the opportunity to take a swipe, acknowledging they had not been able to witness the fan atmosphere despite working for the broadcaster that evening.
"Nobody said fans," Logan stated. "I think the fans have been incredible at this tournament. Every single nation, but there were certain countries like Norway. Fans who really lit it up."
Richards quipped: "There are not that many fans in Salford!" Logan responded: "You can't say the S-word again."
Lineker's Departure and Digs
Lineker, who collaborates with Richards on the Rest of Football podcast, has established himself in the United States after leaving the BBC. He sparked conversation with a pointed remark when unveiling his plans: "This World Cup will be different because of all the other ones I've done at the BBC. I would have been in Salford in the green box, and now I'm in New York City, at Times Square."
The Match of the Day stalwart of 26 years even made an appearance on ITV after leaving the BBC. In a brief sketch, Lineker recreated his signature opening during his guest spot. "Thank you very much for joining us on ITV for this one," he said. "Another day, another game, another channel." Laura Woods interrupted Lineker, cutting in: "Gary, that's my job!" Lineker replied: "Sorry, sorry. Old habits!"
