The fifth season of 'Emily in Paris' is set to shoot in Venice for part of its upcoming run, according to Luca Zaia, governor of the Veneto region. Filming is scheduled to take place in the lagoon city between August 5 and 15, with director Andrew Fleming currently scouting locations.
Zaia announced the news in a statement to Italian press, describing it as 'extraordinary' and confirming that the production is working with the Veneto Film Commission and Venice-based company 360 Degrees Film. 'It’s a source of pride to see Venetian talent promoting their region and bringing the name of Venice and the Veneto to millions of homes around the world,' he said.
Production on 'Emily in Paris' Season 5 began in May in Rome and moved to Paris in June. The story picks up days after the end of Season 4, with Emily settling into her Roman apartment to run Agence Grateau’s Italian office and spending time with Marcello, the heir to a cashmere company.
Venice’s inclusion in the Netflix series follows the city making headlines for the lavish wedding of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez, which sparked protests from activists who argue that Venice is becoming a playground for the rich at the expense of local residents.
The show’s cultural impact has been significant, with French President Emmanuel Macron telling Variety last October that France would 'fight hard' to keep the series in the country, prompting a lighthearted feud with Rome's mayor, Roberto Gualtieri. Macron can now add Veneto governor Zaia to his list of rivals.
