Lena Dunham's new Netflix series, Too Much, has been met with disappointment, failing to capture the sharp satire and cultural impact of her seminal HBO show Girls. The 10-part romcom follows Jessica (Megan Stalter), a prickly and awkward American who moves to London after a messy breakup, where she falls for a handsome musician (Will Sharpe). Despite a strong cast including Andrew Scott, Naomi Watts, and Stephen Fry, the series lacks the incisive commentary that made Girls a touchstone for millennials.
Dunham, who co-created the show with her husband Luis Felber, steers away from satirising specific scenes or tropes, instead focusing on the central romance. While there are sensitive moments between the two leads, the comedy often falls flat. Stalter, known for her internet comedy, struggles to translate her heightened style to a leading role, and the show's reliance on romcom clichés feels underbaked.
