Sports broadcaster Kelly Cates and Jamie Redknapp have been friends for decades. The pair first crossed paths when Kelly's father Sir Kenny Dalglish signed Jamie for Liverpool during his first spell as manager. A teenage Kelly was a regular fixture at the club at the time.
Cheeky Voice Note Leaves Kelly Red-Faced
However, a recent appearance on Romesh Ranganathan's podcast left Kelly feeling mortified after Jamie submitted a cheeky question. The Sky Sports colleague sent a voice note praising Kelly, calling her 'brilliant at her job' and 'an amazing human'. He then asked: 'I want to know, what my nickname was from Kelly, when I had my bad eye infection?'
Kelly instantly responded: 'I hate him,' before revealing that the nickname for Jamie when he had the condition was 'Romesh'. The comedian suffers from ptosis, a drooping eyelid, and a lazy eye caused by a severe childhood infection.
Kelly continued: 'Oh my God, I really hate him. I genuinely, I've known him for coming up to 40 years now. But he does tell people that I have a rubber sheet on my bed. So he spends his life. He's like, 'she's great, she's a really nice human, I love working with her.' And then stitches me up, not once, but twice.'
Romesh Joins the Fun
Romesh then waded in, feeling unfairly dragged into the dispute. He quipped: 'I feel like if Jamie has done you wrong like that, say something against him. Don't call him Romesh. That's on me. That's like I'm telling people you've got a rubber sheet. I've done nothing. I'm an innocent victim in all this.'
Kelly began suggesting that Jamie was 'very clever' at playing his cards close, but Romesh interrupted: 'No he's not, let me stop you there. I don't mind you coming on and offering opinion. What I won't have is you offering fundamental untruth.'
The remark left Kelly in fits of laughter, as she joked that 'you need to fact check it' before admitting she was 'really warm'. Jamie was one of the founding team captains on A League of Their Own, while Romesh joined as presenter in 2018, initially as a panellist before succeeding James Corden as lead presenter in 2021.
