John McEnroe Told 'Never to Return' to BBC After Abandoning Wimbledon Commentary
John McEnroe Abandons BBC Wimbledon Commentary Mid-Match

John McEnroe abruptly ended his BBC commentary duties during Arthur Fery's fourth-round Wimbledon match against Grigor Dimitrov on Centre Court. The American tennis legend was in the BBC box alongside Andrew Cotter and Tim Henman when he left mid-match to fulfill contractual obligations covering Taylor Fritz's match on Court 1.

Departure During Play

Fery, the only British man to reach the second week of the singles draw, had taken the first set 7-5 before Dimitrov fought back to win the second and third sets. During an extended toilet break by Fery at the end of the second set, McEnroe seized the opportunity to exit. Cotter told viewers: 'I think we're going to have to bid farewell at this point. John McEnroe to take a break, never to return.' McEnroe replied: 'Well, hopefully I'll return but I've got contractual obligations to do the lone American in the draw, Taylor Fritz. He's maybe the slight favourite to get to the final on this half. I'm sure Bublik, Zverev and others may have a say about that. You guys call a great rest of the match.'

Fritz's Match Coverage

McEnroe's departure was prompted by the conclusion of Linda Noskova's 6-4, 7-6 (2) victory over Madison Keys on Court 1, which freed up the court for Fritz's fourth-round clash against Alexander Bublik. Fritz, the No. 6 seed, had earlier commented on his opponent: 'I don't really have a preference between the two of 'em. Both are very crafty. Good grass court players playing well. In form. I mean, I have good stuff to go off of because I played both of them in this grass court season. Yeah, I mean, no preference. But both really, really dangerous players. It's not an easy round of 16.' Bublik needed five sets to defeat Frances Tiafoe in the third round and took Fritz to a first-set tie-break, but the American won it to take the lead on Court 1.
