Scottish actor John Hannah has paid tribute to his new co-star Carolina Bécquer in the Channel 5 crime drama Benidorm is Murder, which is now available to watch on the channel.
A New Crime Drama from the Death in Paradise Writer
The series, penned by the writer behind Death in Paradise, follows Dennis, a burned-out ex-police officer hiding behind a failing Scottish pub in Benidorm, and Rosa, an aspiring actress obsessed with classic British crime shows, who talks her way into his bar, his investigations, and his life.
According to the synopsis: "Together, they're the last people anyone would trust to solve a murder — which is exactly why they keep solving them."
Setting as a Beating Heart
The show is set in "the glorious and chaotic Benidorm — tribute acts, bingo queens, hen parties, sunburnt tourists and bar owners hanging on by a thread — Benidorm is Murder treats its setting as a beating heart, not as a punchline."
Each episode delivers a fresh puzzle, with clues, twists, and a satisfying solution, while Dennis and Rosa dig deeper into Benidorm's underbelly. When an old enemy walks into The Tavern and a lock-in ends with blood on the floor, Dennis becomes the number one suspect in a murder mystery even he might not be able to solve.
Hannah's Praise for Bécquer
Ahead of the series airing, Hannah exclusively shared his thoughts on working with Bécquer, who revealed this was her first major TV role: "She’s fantastic, lovely to work with, how easy. There was no screaming abdabs or anything like, ‘I couldn’t do it’."
Bécquer, who plays Rosa, said she felt an immediate connection to her character: "I loved it, I love crime dramas and mysteries, I was not expecting it to be so funny. I think that’s one of the things that attracted me most from the script. I was reading it at home and laughing out loud, and Rosa’s character, I felt an immediate connection to her."
She added: "I felt such a strong connection to her, I knew who she was and how I wanted to play her, and that had never happened before. And in the audition, I just had so much fun, it was so fun to play her."
