Jenna Ortega has revealed that the second season of the hit Netflix series Wednesday will delve deeper into the relationship between her character and her mother, Morticia Addams, played by Catherine Zeta-Jones. The actress told the BBC that the new episodes explore the mother-daughter dynamic in a way that feels 'very applicable' to her own teenage experiences.
Ortega explained that the tension between Wednesday and Morticia stems from generational differences: 'It’s very typical for mother and daughter to butt heads, and the daughter wanting to be her own person... But also the mother's desire to look after her children and be protective.' She added that the Addams family's 'strangeness' makes them relatable because they are a cohesive unit despite their differences.
The first season, released in 2022, became the third most-watched series in Netflix history, amassing 400 million viewing hours in its second week. The upcoming season was delayed by the 2023 Hollywood writers' strikes, and Ortega thanked fans for their patience, promising 'new and more exciting' content.
The season two trailer, released in July, shows Wednesday returning to Nevermore Academy and receiving a psychic vision of her werewolf roommate Enid's death. New cast members include Steve Buscemi as headmaster Barry Dort, Billie Piper as music teacher Isadora Capri, and Joanna Lumley as Wednesday's grandmother.
Wednesday season two streams on Netflix from 6 August.
