Jane Fonda has expressed surprise that Barbra Streisand was chosen to lead the tribute to Robert Redford at this year's Academy Awards, rather than herself. Speaking on the red carpet at an Oscars afterparty, the 88-year-old actress noted that while Streisand made only one film with Redford, she had starred alongside him in four.
Fonda, who worked with Redford in The Chase (1966), Barefoot in the Park (1967), The Electric Horseman (1979) and Our Souls at Night (2017), said: 'I want to know how come Streisand was up there doing that for Redford? ... I have more to say.'
Streisand's tribute, part of the evening's in memoriam segment, honoured the late actor who died last October. She recalled their time together on the 1973 film The Way We Were and praised his commitment to freedom of the press, environmental protection and his Sundance Institute.
Reflecting on Redford, Fonda told reporters she 'was always in love with him', describing him as 'the most gorgeous human being' with 'such great values'. She added that he 'lifted up independent movies' and changed the industry.
The extended tributes also included segments for Rob Reiner and Diane Keaton, while stars such as Robert Duvall and Terence Stamp were remembered. Notable omissions included Brigitte Bardot and Bud Cort.
