James Gunn has revealed new details about the upcoming Superman sequel, 'Man of Tomorrow', during an appearance on Howard Stern's SiriusXM radio show. The writer-director confirmed that filming is expected to begin in April 2026, with Warner Bros scheduling a release date of July 9, 2027, roughly two years after the first 'Superman' film.
Gunn teased the plot, describing it as a story where Lex Luthor and Superman must work together against a much larger threat. 'It’s as much a Lex movie as it is a Superman movie,' Gunn said, praising his work with Nicholas Hoult, who reprises his role as Lex Luthor. David Corenswet returns as the Man of Steel.
The director noted that he 'loves the script so much' and expressed enthusiasm for creating something extraordinary with the two characters. The announcement builds on a social media post from September 2023, which featured a comic book image of Superman standing beside Lex in his Warsuit, hinting at their uneasy alliance.
'Superman' successfully launched Gunn's DC Universe, grossing $614 million worldwide, making it the year's top comic book movie. The sequel is part of a broader slate that includes 'Supergirl', 'Clayface', and the HBO Max series 'Lanterns'.
