ITV has launched a free 24/7 channel dedicated to the long-running zombie apocalypse show The Walking Dead. The new ad-supported streaming television (FAST) channel went live on ITVX on Tuesday, offering a continuous live stream of the original series and its spin-off Fear the Walking Dead, starring Colman Domingo.
The launch follows a partnership deal last month between ITV and AMC Global Media, granting ITV broadcast rights to what it describes as 'one of television's most iconic franchises'. The channel is free to view without any subscription.
Expanding ITVX's free channel library
ITVX plans to expand its library of dedicated free-to-view channels with ITV fan favourites, including The Only Way Is Essex, Midsomer Murders, and The Chase. These additions aim to cater to diverse viewer preferences beyond The Walking Dead.
Why binge The Walking Dead?
Metro's TV Editor Sabrina Barr explains the appeal of the post-apocalyptic series. 'It's been 16 years since The Walking Dead began – and I'll admit it, I didn't jump on the bandwagon right away,' she says. 'I hadn't watched many zombie films and TV shows at that point (except the White Walkers in Game of Thrones), but eventually I decided to give it a go.'
Barr highlights the strong ensemble cast as a key factor in the show's success. 'Just like one of my favourite other shows, Lost, the strong ensemble cast is what made TWD shine and, in my opinion, turned it into the phenomenon that it is today.' She warns viewers to prepare for emotional moments: 'Prepare for heartbreak that'll make your chest feel like it's been split in two and joy that'll restore your faith in humanity.'
Sky's takeover of ITV
The channel launch comes after Sky announced this week it is set to buy ITV for £1.6 billion, pending regulatory approval. The deal, described as one of the biggest media takeovers in British history, would see Sky acquire ITV's TV and streaming channels after takeover talks began at the end of last year.
Sky hopes to use ITVX to build a UK streaming titan to rival Netflix and Disney Plus. Major shows such as Coronation Street, Love Island, Emmerdale, and I'm a Celebrity will remain free on ITV and ITVX. ITV is legally required to provide a free-to-air service until at least 2034, ensuring The Walking Dead channel stays behind no paywall for now.
