Plot and Setting
The show follows an old-school Scotland Yard veteran detective who transfers to the North East of England after his wife is killed in a hit-and-run, determined to avenge her death linked to a criminal he pursued. While working on this personal mission, he investigates complex crimes in the north. Set in the 1960s and 1970s around Newcastle, Northumberland, and County Durham, the series ran for eight seasons.

At the heart of Inspector George Gently is actor Martin Shaw, known for roles in The Professionals, The Chief, and Judge John Deed. His right-hand man Detective Inspector John Bacchus is portrayed by Lee Ingleby, who appeared in The A Word and Netflix's Criminal: UK. They are joined by Lisa McGrillis, Tom Hutch, and Annabel Scholey.
