Netflix has announced that Idris Elba will reprise his role as DCI John Luther in a new feature film, with Dermot Crowley returning as Martin Schenk. The sequel to 2023's Luther: The Fallen Sun will be directed by Jamie Payne and written by Neil Cross, the creator of the original series.
Ruth Wilson is also set to return as the formidable Alice Morgan, a prospect that has Cross buzzing with anticipation. Speaking to Tudum, he said: 'Luther, Alice, and Schenk are more than characters to me – they're family. I never stop wondering where they are, what's become of them ... and what horrors might be stirring in the shadows of London while Luther's not around. So we decided to get together and find out what happens next.'
In the forthcoming film, a savage, seemingly random string of murders shakes London, and Luther is covertly summoned back into action. However, his mission is complicated by the fact that everyone seems to want him dead. Director Payne described the plot as 'a wonderfully dark tale', expressing his delight at being back on the project.
Payne added: 'I am also thrilled to be reunited with the brilliant and dangerous Alice Morgan, played by the extraordinarily talented Ruth Wilson. Fans new and old are in for a treat!' After the announcement on Netflix's X account, fans shared their excitement, with one commenting: 'Idris, Ruth and Dermot reunited? Take my night, my weekend, my soul.'
