Idris Elba is set to return as Detective John Luther in a film sequel to 2023's Luther: The Fallen Sun for Netflix. The streaming service has confirmed that Dermot Crowley and Ruth Wilson will also reprise their roles from the original BBC series, with Crowley as DSU Martin Schenk and Wilson as Alice Morgan.
The sequel will be directed by Jamie Payne, who helmed The Fallen Sun and directed episodes of the original series, and written by creator Neil Cross. The plot sees Luther secretly drawn back into service following a wave of brutal and random murders in London, with the added complication that everyone wants him dead.
Wilson's Alice Morgan originally appeared in three of the five series of Luther, but was absent from The Fallen Sun. Crowley's Martin Schenk also featured in the film, having evolved from an office antagonist to an ally within the police force. The Fallen Sun itself also starred Cynthia Erivo and Andy Serkis, and followed the disgraced detective breaking out of prison to hunt a serial killer.
The original television show ran for five series from 2010, centring on Elba's titular detective. Chernin Entertainment will produce alongside Cross, with Elba and Gina Carter producing via 22Summers and Tim Lewis also attached.
