The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, the prequel to the hugely successful Hunger Games series, is set for global release on November 17, 2023. The film explores the transformation of Coriolanus Snow into the tyrannical President Snow, a villain origin story that director Francis Lawrence and screenwriters Michael Lesslie and Michael Arndt have crafted with care.
Set 64 years before the original films, the story follows 18-year-old Snow (Tom Blyth) as he mentors Lucy Gray Baird (Rachel Zegler), a tribute from District 12, during the 10th annual Hunger Games. The early Panem is depicted with muted colours and a basic arena, lacking the spectacle of later Games. Viola Davis delivers a campy performance as Dr. Gaul, planting seeds for the evolution of the Games.
Tom Blyth brings a layered performance, capturing Snow's internal struggle between ambition and morality. However, Rachel Zegler's portrayal of Lucy Gray fails to match his intensity, and the lack of chemistry between the pair is notable. The film's three-part structure runs long at two hours and 38 minutes, and could benefit from tighter editing.
While prequels often seem like cynical cash grabs, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes largely succeeds thanks to its cast and crew. It offers a heartbreaking story of power, love, and betrayal, though the romantic subplot falls short of compelling.
