Richard Osman Reveals House of Games Transformation Ahead of Michael Sheen's Hosting Debut
Richard Osman has disclosed significant alterations to the popular BBC quiz programme House of Games, as actor Michael Sheen prepares to assume hosting responsibilities. The presenter and author, aged 55, confirmed earlier this month his departure from the show after fronting it since its inception in 2017.
New Host and Major Rebranding Announced
Following Osman's announcement, the BBC confirmed that Welsh actor Michael Sheen, 57, would be taking over the hosting role. During a recent episode of his podcast The Rest is Entertainment, Osman elaborated on the forthcoming changes, indicating that Sheen will put his own stamp on the programme.
"One of the things they're currently doing is producing prizes with his face on," Osman revealed. "So it will be called Michael Sheen's House of Games."
Production has not yet commenced on Osman's final episodes or Sheen's debut instalments. The Pointless co-creator explained to co-host Marina Hyde that he will return to Salford for a final week of recording, which will include a special 'handover' episode.
Continuity and Future Appearances
Despite the leadership transition, Osman emphasized the continuity of the programme. "We all want everyone to know how delighted we are Michael's doing it," he stated. "So there's a continuation. I want to welcome him as well. He's got the best team in telly there and he'll have an absolute ball."
When questioned about potentially returning as a contestant, Osman confirmed his interest but suggested it wouldn't happen immediately. "I think that's too meta and you have to let someone get their feet under the table," he elaborated. "But one day I'd love to. In a few years. Christmas week or something like that."
Osman concluded with warm wishes for his successor: "I wish him such luck. I messaged him the other day and said this is such a fun show to do and such a lovely gang. It's a great show for him and he's a great host for it."
Michael Sheen's Additional BBC Commitments
House of Games reportedly isn't the only major BBC programme that Michael Sheen has recently joined. According to sources, the actor has signed up for the next series of Celebrity Traitors, drawing on his experience portraying deceptive characters.
"Michael has had a lot of practice playing lying, duplicitous and scheming men - the Traitors should be a breeze," a source told The Sun. "He is very much seen as a 'big dog' signing. Behind the scenes, everyone is hugely excited. Michael is a massive fan of the show so it makes total sense that he would want to be a part of it."
The source added that this year's celebrity edition promises "some incredible names, a real blend of characters, and promises to be incredible." Daily Mail has contacted representatives for both Michael Sheen and the BBC for official comment.
Celebrity Traitors Series Two Developments
This news follows host Claudia Winkleman's revelation on Thursday that the line-up for Celebrity Traitors series two has been finalized. Winkleman expressed astonishment when she learned the identities of the participants.
Appearing on The One Show to promote her new BBC chat programme, Winkleman confirmed that more 'big dogs' would be joining the celebrity edition, following the successful first series that featured comedian Alan Carr as the winning Traitor.
"There certainly are," Winkleman responded when asked about high-profile participants. "The people who make it are extraordinary and they had to repeat the people twice to me because I was like, 'Huh, are you joking? Come again'. So, we're incredibly lucky."
Addressing whether famous personalities were eager to participate following the success of the initial celebrity series, Winkleman added: "Yeah, I hope so. We're so grateful that people want to come and play the game. And the people who said yes for series one, I still can't believe it. I was shaking when you see Stephen Fry walking around the castle and Alan Carr, Ruth Codd, all of these people I was obsessed by. I'm very excited. But I can't say anything else, don't make eye contact with me."
