He Had It Coming: BBC's New Crime Drama Binge

The BBC has acquired He Had It Coming, an eight-part Australian comedy crime drama starring It's A Sin's Lydia West. The series will air on BBC iPlayer from Saturday 8 August and begin on BBC Three at 11:15pm on Friday 15 August.

The whodunnit follows Elise (West), a British scholarship student, and Barbara (Natasha Liu Bordizzo), an influencer, who find themselves caught up in a murder mystery after a night out takes an unexpected turn. Cody Simpson plays the university's star athlete, and Liv Hewson appears as Detective Shepherd.

Murder on campus

After a series of mishaps with men, the two women decide to take action. Barbara leads an activist art project at night, and while drunk the pair deface a statue of the university's male founder in the quadrangle.

When they wake to discover the athlete has been murdered and displayed at the foot of their political statement, they must urgently erase all ties to the crime. Detective Shepherd follows the clues they leave behind, while the pair race to find the real culprit amid rising gender tensions and a growing body count.

Already a hit with viewers

The series originally aired in Australia last year and has been well received. Online reaction included one viewer saying, "Truely loved it," while another wrote, "This show is glorious and everyone should watch it." A third added, "I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS."

Behind the scenes

Speaking to Stan media, West recalled how director Rachel House had imagined one particular scene like a western, with the two characters at opposite ends of a library facing off. West said it felt theatrical because the actors had to project their voices across the space.

Bordizzo added that it felt like theatre acting, and that the way she read a scene was often different to how it was ultimately shot.
