The first season, based on J.K. Rowling's debut novel Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, is set to premiere on HBO, with further seasons adapting the remaining books.
The footage, released on YouTube on Wednesday evening, notably lacks depictions of spells and magical creatures, leaving viewers waiting to see how these crucial elements will be portrayed. The series' longer format, with an entire season devoted to each book, promises more room for character development and exploration of subplots that were curtailed in the films.
The trailer introduces new scenes, such as Harry at his muggle school and on the Tube with Hagrid, played by Nick Frost. However, it offers little insight into the acting abilities of the three leads – Dominic McLaughlin as Harry, Arabella Stanton as Hermione, and Alastair Stout as Ron – all relative newcomers chosen from over 30,000 applicants.
The identity of Voldemort remains a mystery. HBO's Casey Bloys confirmed earlier this week that no actor has been cast for the role, despite speculation involving Tilda Swinton and Cillian Murphy. Warwick Davis will reprise his role as Professor Flitwick, but it is unclear whether original stars Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint will make cameo appearances.
Author J.K. Rowling serves as an executive producer, but her controversial views on gender identity have sparked backlash. John Lithgow, who plays Dumbledore, nearly withdrew from the role over the controversy, while Nick Frost stated he disagrees “in any way” with Rowling’s stance, adding, “She’s allowed her opinion and I’m allowed mine, they just don’t align in any way, shape or form.”
