HBO has officially greenlit a second season of its upcoming Harry Potter television series, moving forward with an accelerated production schedule. The renewal was announced ahead of the Season 1 premiere, titled Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, which is set to debut at Christmas. Filming for the second season is scheduled to begin this autumn.
Jon Brown, a writer on the first season known for his work on HBO’s Succession, has been promoted to co-showrunner alongside Season 1 showrunner Francesca Gardiner. Gardiner cited the need to maintain momentum during overlapping production schedules as the reason for Brown’s elevation, praising his writing and collaborative skills.
Casey Bloys, Chairman and CEO of HBO and HBO Max Content, revealed in November that writing on the second season had already begun. He emphasised the importance of minimising gaps between seasons, noting the rapid growth of the young cast and the complexity of the show’s special effects and post-production. Season 1 is still filming and is slated to wrap in a couple of weeks.
The series, based on J.K. Rowling’s books, stars Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley, and Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger. Key cast also includes Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid, John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, and Janet McTeer as Professor McGonagall. The show is produced by HBO in association with Brontë Film and TV and Warner Bros. Television.
