Gyles Brandreth has disclosed that he declined the opportunity to compete on Strictly Come Dancing, attributing his decision to a notable absence of rhythmic ability. The former politician and broadcaster, widely recognised for his appearances on Celebrity Gogglebox and ITV's This Morning, took to Twitter to confirm that he had been approached for the show.
The 74-year-old, known for his distinctive choice of knitwear, wrote: "Yes, I have been approached about doing #Strictly (and I'm flattered because I love the show), but sadly it's not for me for this compelling reason: I ain't got rhythm … I REALLY ain't got rhythm."
Despite his self-deprecating admission, fans were quick to challenge his assessment. One supporter wrote: "Gyles, we need to see this please," while another insisted: "do it gyles please for the fans." A third added: "I am sure you would do better than a lot of them! Can just see you with a Fred Astaire number." Another commented: "I'm sure I've seen you dance on stage - though a few years ago. I thought you were great. Do it!!"
The BBC has since unveiled the full line-up for this year's series, featuring 15 celebrities who will be hoping to fare better than Brandreth in the rhythm department. Judges Craig Revel Horwood, Motsi Mabuse, Shirley Ballas and Anton Du Beke are all returning to the panel, alongside four new professional dancers. Last year's competition was won by EastEnders actress Rose Ayling-Ellis and her professional partner Giovanni Pernice.
Strictly Come Dancing's launch show is confirmed for September 7, with the competition proper beginning in the autumn on BBC One. Viewers will have less than a month to wait before the new series kicks off.
