Grey's Anatomy returned for its 22nd season on Thursday, and the premiere confirmed the death of Dr Monica Beltran, played by Natalie Morales. The character succumbed to injuries sustained in the gas explosion that concluded season 21, leaving fans heartbroken.
The pediatric surgeon initially appeared to have only a shattered pelvis, but she was trapped under operating light equipment while guiding Dr Jules Millin through a difficult surgery. Despite her coaching, the fire crew could not save her, and she died heroically.
Showrunner Meg Marinis told The Hollywood Reporter that the decision was difficult: 'I wanted to see someone die selflessly saving someone else's life, and she was saving that little kid on the table and saving Jules. It was very painful.' Fans took to social media to express their grief, with many calling the death unfair.
Morales first appeared as a guest star in season 20 and became a recurring cast member in season 21. The new season comprises 18 episodes, airing weekly on ABC in the US and on Disney+ in the UK the following day.
