A new all-female period drama is already being described as 'Great Gatsby meets murder mystery' as its first trailer is released. Prime Video has given fans their first look at the upcoming film Hedda, directed by acclaimed horror filmmaker Nia DaCosta, who also wrote the screenplay.
The film stars MCU actress Tessa Thompson in the title role of Hedda Gabler, a part previously played on stage and screen by the likes of Maggie Smith, Cate Blanchett and Glenda Jackson. Set in 1950s London, the thriller centres on a love triangle and an all-female trio, with Hedda torn between a past love and her suffocating present.
Thompson is joined by Imogen Poots, Tom Bateman, Nicholas Pinnock and Nina Hoss. Hedda will be released in selected cinemas from 22 October before streaming on Prime Video from 29 October.
DaCosta said of her adaptation: 'I thought this character was terrifying, but also how brave to write a character like this, who is unredeemable and does horrible things, but you’re telling it from her perspective and have huge empathy for her.' She added that previous adaptations lacked the dark humour and sexiness of Ibsen's original.
