Gerard Butler's disaster film Geostorm, described as 'bonkers' by fans, is now streaming on Netflix. The 2017 movie was added to the platform on Tuesday, July 28.
Plot and Cast
Directed by Dean Devlin in his feature directorial debut, Geostorm follows satellite designer Jake Lawson (Butler), who must save the world from a storm of epic proportions caused by malfunctioning climate-controlling satellites. Butler plays a former ICSS commander with a range of skills.
The supporting cast includes Jim Sturgess, Abbie Cornish, Alexandra Maria Lara, Ed Harris, Andy García, Richard Schiff, Robert Sheehan, and Zazie Beetz.
Critical and Commercial Reception
Critics panned the film, giving it a brutal 18% score on Rotten Tomatoes. The critical consensus reads: 'Lacking impressive visuals, well-written characters, or involving drama, Geostorm aims for epic disaster-movie spectacle but ends up simply being a disaster of a movie.'
Financially, Geostorm grossed $221.6 million against a production budget of $120 million. Analysts estimated it needed at least $300 million to break even.

Despite the criticism, fans on Letterboxd have embraced the film as 'dumb fun.' User @mattlynch 28 wrote: '100% here for this ARMAGEDDON / 2012 knockoff mashup garbage. They sent Gerry Butler into space because he truly belongs among the stars.'
@helen commented: 'It looks fantastic, everything is SO incredibly crisp and clear. The effects are mostly great and it packs a solid punch with the disaster sequences. Not to mention that the cast is actually really decent. Is it completely ridiculous? Of course but like, that’s the point.'
@lou added: 'All I ask from dumb popcorn movies is spectacle/to be entertained. Geostorm delivers in that regard, and it does so in spades. Just a super fun extreme weather/disaster movie with an imaginative sci-fi angle and a bit of political intrigue.'
