Clyde 1 has officially moved to its new home in Glasgow city centre after 43 years in Clydebank. The broadcaster's new location at 100 Queen Street looks onto the Duke of Wellington statue, one of the city's most iconic landmarks.
To mark the occasion, Clyde 1 legend George Bowie re-crowned the famous statue with a personalised Clyde 1 traffic cone on its head. Footage of Bowie being lifted on a cherry picker to make his mark on the new location was shared to Instagram on Friday, August 28.
Fans react to the cherry picker moment
The post read: "We've arrived at our brand new home on Queen Street in Glasgow. We've said farewell to Clydebank Business Park after 43 years. @gbxanthems is getting familiar with his new surroundings."
However, some fans were not impressed by the cherry picker. One wrote: "This goes against everything that made the cone on the heed iconic in the first place," while another agreed, saying: "A cany believe you got a cherry picker to get you up there and you didn’t climb it."
Station returns to the city after decades
Clyde 1's new headquarters, directly across from the Gallery of Modern Art, marks the first time the station has been situated in the city for 43 years. The station, which launched on December 31, 1973 from the Anderston Centre, moved to Clydebank in 1983 where it has been ever since. It has now returned to the city, leaving its old home of Clydebank business park behind.
Bowie shared a heartfelt Instagram post this morning as he bid farewell to the studios he has worked in for 38 years. Sharing a snap of him outside the Clydebank studio, he wrote: "After 38 years it’s time to walk through these doors for the last time. Good bye Clydebank. Love ya!"
Fans reassured over relocation
Concerned fans rushed to the comments, with many thinking Bowie was announcing the end of his Clyde 1 career. One wrote: "No! This can't be real." A second chimed in: "There is no Clyde 1 without GB, what's happening?"
Fans need not fear, as the Bowie at Breakfast star confirmed this morning he is simply relocating with the rest of the team. Speaking of the move, Bowie said: "I started my career in Clydebank, so I’ll always have great memories of the place. But moving back into the city centre, into brand-new, state-of-the-art studios, is such an exciting step - and what a view of the Duke of Wellington to inspire us every morning!"
