Gardeners' World viewers have shared heartfelt messages ahead of Monty Don's final episode tonight, thanking the presenter for his advice and the comfort the programme has brought them over the years.
Don is stepping down after 23 years at the helm of the BBC programme, prompting fans to recall how much his company and gardening guidance have meant to them.
Emotional Tributes From Viewers
One fan, whose husband died in August, explained that they had always watched the programme together. She wrote: "He had Alzheimer's but always perked up when he heard the Gardeners' World Theme." She added: "Thank you from the bottom of my broken heart."
Another wrote: "Monty, I'm going to miss you so much, and your beautiful dog Ned, your advice, your gentle voice, and personal delivery. I'm not sure I'll ever be ready for the end of this particular era. Thank you so much for inspiring so many of us, and please keep posting on Instagram."
Fans React to the News
Other viewers struggled to take in the news. One posted alongside a crying face emoji: "I was not prepared for this." Another added: "Mentally... I'm not ready for this. Physically, not ready for this. I say it again... I am not ready for this."
One supporter wrote: "The words 'welcome to Gardeners World' will never sound the same." Another said: "Emotional times. Wonderful Monty. Ever grateful for all your magic at Longmeadow."
Don's Final Message
The tributes followed a video Don shared earlier in the week, inviting viewers to join him for his final episode. The BBC has yet to announce who will succeed him.
Don said: "This Friday will be my very last Gardeners' World. I began 23 years ago. For 16 years, we've been filming in this garden with my various dogs, and that's come to an end. But it's a brilliant programme, as ever, and it's been a complete privilege to be part of it. So join me on Friday for the last time."
Calling to his dog Ned, he said, "Shall we go?" as Ned jumped over the fence.
Earlier this year, Don explained that it was the "right time" for a change, while making clear he would continue working with the BBC on other projects. He said: "Throughout that time - and around seven hundred programmes - I have had the privilege of sharing my own abiding passion for gardens and gardening with an equally passionate, and often equally knowledgeable audience."
"That connection with millions, not just in Britain but across the world, who share a love of gardens, plants and the natural world, is something I have always treasured and which I increasingly believe to be at the heart of a life well lived."
"I have also always relished the craft of programme making and to do so, week in week out, as part of a superlative BBC team has been a deeply rewarding experience. But now is the right time for a change."
"I look forward to continuing to work with and for the BBC on other projects, as well as following new avenues. There are more books to write, more programmes to make. And of course, I will still be gardening, dog by my side, here at Longmeadow."
Gardeners' World is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
