Ross Mullan, who portrayed a White Walker in Game of Thrones seasons two to four, has revealed the intricate work behind the chilling creatures. In an interview, he explained that the costumes are largely practical, with only minor CGI enhancements.
“With the White Walkers, it’s 99 per cent prosthetics,” Mullan said. “Only the steam coming off my body and the blue eyes are CGI. But you need a bit to blend the scene.” He praised the craftsmanship, noting that the make-up was “incredibly beautiful”.
The actor recalled his first appearance in the season two finale, where he marched past Samwell Tarly. “I was bare-chested, wearing a mini-skirt,” he said. Despite the lack of dialogue, filming a two-minute scene took up to five days as the team experimented with different approaches.
Mullan also shared an amusing post-shoot ritual: making small-talk with crew while still in costume. “You’re standing there dressed as a White Walker, and they’re going: ‘So what are your plans for tonight?’”
