Furious, a new eight-part crime thriller on Disney+, is already being hailed as "the new Killing Eve" by fans and critics alike. The series, created by New Girl showrunner Elizabeth Meriwether, has earned rave reviews for its 'genuinely gripping' narrative and 'enormously entertaining' execution.
A High-Stakes Cat-and-Mouse Game
The plot centers on a tense, obsessive relationship between an FBI agent and a killer, exploring themes of female rage and trauma. Emmy Rossum, known for Shameless, plays FBI agent Alice Black, who is tracking Catherine, portrayed by Lola Petticrew from Trespasses. Catherine is on a killing spree targeting men she believes have wronged women.
Their dynamic quickly evolves into a 'complicated psychological relationship' with deadly consequences, reminiscent of the electric connection between Sandra Oh and Jodie Comer in Killing Eve. The series is loosely inspired by the 80s film Black Widow, but delves deeper into the psychological aftermath of abuse.
Complex Characters and Compelling Performances
Rossum told Entertainment Weekly that the two leads are more alike than they seem: "I think it's interesting to have a crime thriller where the two female superpowers in the dual lead roles are actually more similar than they are different." She added, "They're both victims of violence who are looking for justice both for themselves and also on a much larger scale in unconventional ways."
The series has received impressive reviews, with The Guardian giving it four stars and calling it "enormously entertaining TV that demands you pay attention," a "must-see for Killing Eve fans." NME praised the show for flipping "the overworked serial killer genre on its head to explore a story carved out in the post-Epstein era." Critics at The People's Movies highlighted Rossum's "quietly compelling performance," describing the series as "intense, violent and emotionally heavy, yet dangerously bingeable."
