The BBC has delighted fans by unveiling the first official images for the highly anticipated second series of its Northern Ireland-set comedy, Funboys. In a major casting coup, the broadcaster has confirmed that comedy legend Steve Coogan will join the ensemble in a guest role.
Steve Coogan's Pungent Role
According to reports from the Irish Mirror, the Alan Partridge star will portray a character named Phillip, a deeply frustrated actor who finds employment at a folk museum. There, he takes on the role of a member of the landed gentry, a part that seems to blur dangerously with his own personality.
The BBC provided a character description, stating: "Pompous, cruel and petty, the line between Phillip and the land steward he plays is a very thin one and his role at the folk park is more just an excuse to let his pungent sadism run riot." This promises a memorable and biting performance from the acclaimed comedian.
Return to Ballymacnoose
Funboys, a co-production between BBC and BBC Northern Ireland, launched to critical and audience acclaim last year. The series follows the misadventures of a group of young men in the fictional rural town of Ballymacnoose as they haphazardly navigate the path to adulthood.
An official synopsis for the new series teases: "The soft bellied boys of Ballymacnoose are back. After last year, tackling the weight of grief, suppository drugs and being a bastard, the gang have come out the other side all grown up." It details that Callum (Ryan Dylan) is experimenting with a perm, Gemma (Ele McKenzie) and Lorcan (Lee R James) are in a passionate relationship, and Jordan (Rian Lennon) has managed to control his temper.
Dark Clouds on the Horizon
However, the synopsis warns that trouble is brewing: "But dark clouds loom! The gang belatedly get involved in Irish history and it's all down-hill from there. Bigotry, balding and competitive robot combat, if they aren't careful the funboys are about to become the doneboys."
The description poses several humorous questions about the characters' futures, including whether Jordan is losing his hair and if the town is ready for Lorcan's romantic explorations.
Cast Enthusiasm for Series Two
Rian Lennon, who plays the volatile Jordan, offered a vivid metaphor for the show's evolution: "If Funboys Season One was a freshly born fawn, skittering around in its own amniotic sack, then season two is a sinewy young buck galloping through forests thick, leaping into the unknown and screaming 'Hawwwwww!'"
His co-star Ryan Dylan, portraying Callum, advised viewers: "Please take your time with Funboys series two. Enjoy every suck, smack and sniff, and allow this succulent comedy to slide down your gullet and into your soul."
Expanding the Ensemble
The series welcomes back core cast members Brian Devlin, Owen Colgan, Paul Bazely, and Richard Croxford. Joining Steve Coogan as new additions to the lineup are Nicky Harley, Saorlaoith Brady, Lalor Roddy, Donal O'Hanlon, and Amanda Doherty, promising fresh dynamics and comedic interactions.
