Eric Dane, best known for playing Dr Mark Sloan in Grey's Anatomy and Cal Jacobs in Euphoria, has revealed he has been diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), the most common form of motor neurone disease.
The 52-year-old actor confirmed the news to People magazine, stating, "I have been diagnosed with ALS. I am grateful to have my loving family by my side as we navigate this next chapter." Dane is married to actor and model Rebecca Gayheart, and the couple have two children.
Despite the diagnosis, Dane said he would continue his role as Cal Jacobs in the upcoming third season of Euphoria, which is currently in production and set to air in 2026. "I feel fortunate that I am able to continue working and am looking forward to returning to set of Euphoria next week," he told People, asking for privacy for his family during this time.
ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease in North America, is a terminal degenerative disorder that leads to loss of limb function, speech, swallowing, and eventually independent breathing. The average survival time after diagnosis is 27 months, though some patients, like physicist Stephen Hawking, can live for decades with a slow-progressing form. Other notable figures with motor neurone disease include actor David Niven and singer Roberta Flack.
