Sarah Sugden (Katie Hill) has made a major discovery about DS Thea Ramsden (Chelsea Edge) in Emmerdale, and it has put her own future at risk.
The character has been through a lot in recent weeks. After accidentally killing Doctor Caitlin Todd (Caroline Harker), Sarah was staggered when her gran Charity Dingle (Emma Atkins) immediately took the fall for her. Thea arrived in the village and began investigating the death, and it quickly became apparent that she didn’t believe Charity and Sarah’s version of events.
The situation changed for Sarah after she discovered Charity’s lie about baby Leyla. Searching for revenge, Sarah went to the police and changed her statement, claiming that Charity intentionally killed Dr Todd.
Sarah's regret and a new discovery
Sarah quickly regretted her actions and tried to change her statement back, but found herself spending the night at the station for perverting the course of justice. With Charity still trapped behind bars, Sarah got word in tonight’s episode that her gran’s trial date had been set.
Sarah broke down in front of Serena Sugden (Casey Al-Shaqsy), consumed with guilt and devastated that Charity could go to prison for something she didn’t do. A while later, Sarah was walking through the village and spotted Serena in Thea’s car. She immediately set about getting some answers, and was shocked when Serena confirmed that Thea is her friend.
Serena went on to tell Sarah that Thea knows the truth about how Dr Todd died, and has regularly put her neck on the line to prove that the surgeon was pushed in self defence. Sarah realised that if she spoke to Thea, she might be able to help free Charity.
Confrontation and ultimatum
Serena stood her ground and told her to back off, telling Sarah that she cannot mess their plan up. As soon as Thea learnt the developments with Sarah, she made her way to the shop to confront her. Thea reminded Sarah to keep her mouth shut about the truth and she said she would – but still wanted her help with getting Charity out of prison.
Sarah warned Thea that if she didn’t help free Charity, she’d tell the police about what she had done. Thea pointed out that if Sarah did this, it wouldn’t be long until she went to prison for lying and being Dr Todd’s actual killer. But in Sarah’s eyes, she didn’t care.
It’s certainly a risk. If Thea helps free Charity, does that mean Sarah will be sentenced instead?
