Emmerdale star Emma Atkins, who plays Charity Dingle on the iconic ITV soap, has made a rare and heartfelt admission about her son, Albert. The actress, who joined the show in 2000, has become one of the most beloved characters in the Dales, but away from the cameras, she is a devoted mother to her rarely-seen son.
A Candid Confession on This Morning
During a recent appearance on ITV's This Morning, Emma opened up about Albert's birth in a candid confession. Reflecting on filming Charity's recent on-screen birth, she said: "It was fun but it was exhausting! I had to make these birth noises and I was thinking, is it realistic?" She then recalled her own experience, sharing: "Because when I was having Albert, it all went out the window."
Balancing Fame and Motherhood
Emma has been in a happy, long-term relationship with her partner, Tom, for many years. The couple welcomed Albert just before Emma's 40th birthday in March 2015. Although she usually keeps her personal life low-key, she has occasionally spoken about her son. In a 2025 interview with The Mirror, she opened up about her "worry" for Albert, saying: "I'm fiercely loyal. My love for Albert runs very deep, but at the same time, I want him to be his own person. In that regard, Charity and I are similar."
Parenting Philosophy
For Emma, parenting is a delicate balance between protecting her son and allowing him to navigate the world independently. She explained: "I want him to stand on his own two feet and grow up knowing that I have given him that freedom to make decisions for himself, even at an early age. I don't want to be telling him what to do all the time. I try not to be possessive over my own child. I'll be there to steer him and encourage him in the right direction."
Emmerdale airs Monday to Friday at 8:00pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
