Emmerdale's Serena Sugden has been hiding more than one secret, as her close friendship with DS Thea Ramsden has been unveiled, potentially complicating the investigation into Dr Caitlin Todd's death.
Serena's Hidden Connection
Serena (Casey Al-Shaqsy) first appeared in June, helping Charity Dingle (Emma Atkins) during an emotional crisis. She later arrived in the village to reconnect with her estranged cousin Robert Sugden (Ryan Hawley). Last week, she was at Jacobs Fold when Sarah Sugden (Katie Hill) accidentally killed Dr Todd (Caroline Harker) after learning Todd had raped Charity.
Serena helped Charity and Sarah stage the death as self-defence, scratching Charity's arm with Todd's hand. She fled before officers arrived, asking them not to mention her name. After questioning by DS Thea Ramsden (Chelsea Edge), Charity was released on bail, and Serena later gave her account at the police station.
Secret Friendship Revealed
In Monday's episode, DS Ramsden visited Serena at Butler's Farm, and the two embraced warmly. Ramsden questioned why Serena was helping Charity, to which Serena replied: "The system couldn't help Charity, so I'm steering her straight before she gets hurt or tripped up." Serena then asked Thea to keep her informed about the case, but Thea firmly stated: "I'm not tampering with evidence," before adding: "I'll do what I can, where I can."
At the episode's end, Thea asked Serena to dig up dirt on the Tates, hinting at a personal grudge against the Home Farm family.
Actress Explains Friendship
Casey Al-Shaqsy revealed that Serena's secret texting has been with Thea, describing them as "very, very close friends that anyone can relate to - you know, [like] your bestie from home." She added that Serena's friend asked for a favour, and Serena was "looking out for somebody else and trying to get all this information for her."
Al-Shaqsy noted that keeping the friendship secret was Thea's wish, but now that Thea is working on a case involving Serena, "trials and tribulations" are ahead for the duo. Emmerdale airs weekdays at 8pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
