Emmerdale's Sarah Sugden (Katie Hill) decides to go to the police about Dr Todd's (Caroline Harker) death, driven by guilt as her grandmother Charity Dingle (Emma Atkins) takes the fall for the accidental killing.
Sarah, who is not a killer but has dabbled in stealing cars and petty crime, accidentally shoved Todd, leading to her death. Actress Katie Hill told Metro: 'She doesn't have it in her... she doesn't even know how to process it. She can't comprehend that this has happened.'
Charity's Sacrifice and Sarah's Spiraling Guilt
Charity is taking the fall to protect Sarah, allowing her to be the mum she's always dreamed of being, given her shorter life expectancy. However, the pair struggle to keep their stories straight, and Sarah's guilt intensifies when Bear Wolf (Joshua Richards) offers unsolicited advice about his own anguish at killing Ray, reflecting on Charity's supposed struggle as a killer.
On the day of Todd's funeral, Sarah is not holding it together. Charity arranges a family meal to detract from the day, but it has the opposite effect. Katie revealed: 'Any mention of Todd, she [Sarah] sees Todd there on the floor again. It's really difficult for her, so Charity tries to think of a way to get Sarah feeling better, and she organises a family dinner to get everyone to come round and try to make things feel a bit more normal again, which doesn't go to plan because something else comes into the works. It's a really tricky period for her, and the funeral just drags it all back up for her.'
DS Ramsden's Investigation and New Evidence
DS Ramsden interrupts the dinner to take Charity down to the station, where she delivers the latest bad news: the forensics and Charity's story do not add up, particularly the evidence of her fighting off Todd. Sarah is horrified and decides she needs to come clean, which is not Serena's (Casey Al-Shaqsy) next move of choice as it would also implicate her. Serena must now come up with a plan to stop her.
In the process, there could be more devastation for Sarah, as she doesn't yet know the full truth about Leyla, but that secret can't possibly stay secret for much longer. Speaking of Sarah finding out, Katie said: 'It would destroy her whole world. Charity has given her the best gift she ever could have asked for, so, for that to be taken away from her, it will definitely cause issues in their relationship.'
So accidentally killing Todd could end up being the least of her worries as the new mum faces what's next.
