Vinny Dingle's past with his abusive father is now affecting Lewis Barton's relationship with his dad Kev Townsend in Emmerdale. The trouble began when Kev's old friend Steve arrived in the village, hoping to commit a robbery. Kev, determined to stay on the straight and narrow, refused to participate, but Vinny spotted them together and assumed the worst.
Vinny's Misunderstanding
Kev had worked hard to create a special birthday cake for Lewis, decorated like his favourite jumper. The celebration was interrupted when Vinny told Ross Barton and Lewis that he had seen Kev and Steve driving away with a crowbar. Lewis, heartbroken, believed his father had let him down again. A scuffle broke out between Kev and Ross, during which Kev accidentally punched Lewis in the face.
Confrontation and Forgiveness
Despite the incident, Lewis forgave Kev in the July 28 episode. He encouraged Kev to try to connect with Vinny. However, Vinny's trauma from his own father's abuse made him assume Kev was the same. When alone with Kev at Dale View, Vinny panicked and tried to push him out, just as Lewis walked in. Lewis assumed Kev was attacking his boyfriend.
The Lie Escalates
Vinny later confessed to Mandy Dingle that he had lied and refused to tell Lewis the truth because he believes Kev should not be in Lewis's life. Mandy pointed out that Vinny cannot choose who Lewis speaks to, but Vinny remained convinced he was doing the right thing. The lie has caused Kev to burn his bridges with Lewis for good.
Kev's Dark Past Resurfaces
At the Anderson household, a spiralling Kev told Steve it was time for people to know who he really is. Viewers may recall that after being dumped by Robert Sugden, Kev once held several people hostage with a sword. The episode suggests that when Kev is emotional, he is capable of anything.
