Emmerdale fans have united in questioning a glaring plot hole surrounding the surname Barton, after Kev Townsend changed his last name to Barton in a grand gesture for his biological son Lewis. But viewers are baffled as to why Lewis even has the surname Barton, given that he was adopted by a different family as a baby.
Kev's Grand Gesture Backfires
Chris Coghill first appeared as Kev Townsend on the ITV soap to track down his secret prison husband, Robert Sugden. As viewers recall, Robert chose Aaron Dingle over Kev, but the character returned after it was revealed he was Lewis Barton's biological father. Recently, Ross Barton tracked Kev down, finding him selling lemon drizzle cake from a van. Ross pleaded for Kev's help to rescue Lewis, who had been kidnapped by Kev's ex-partner, Kylie. Kev agreed and, despite warnings from Ross, told Lewis the truth in a dramatic rendition of Boyzone's Father and Son.
Name Change Sparks Confusion
On Wednesday, July 8, Kev made a grand gesture by changing his surname to Barton so that Lewis would not have to be associated with the Townsend name. However, this move has left fans scratching their heads. In a Reddit thread, user u/prestigious_sand1978 asked: "Why does Lewis have the surname Barton? I could be wrong but if he was birthed by Emma when she wasn’t with whatshisface why wouldn’t she give him her own surname?"
User u/environmental-tea-48 replied: "Emma did give Lewis her own surname, she was Emma Barton until the day that she died. I think it's stranger that his adoptive family never changed it, especially as it seems that he was adopted as a baby."
Viewers Take to Social Media
On X (formerly Twitter), @emmerdaleinside added: "So Kev is now Kev Barton, but we want to know why Lewis is Lewis Barton as he was adopted. And why did he take his birth mother's married name? None of this makes sense!" @clarecryan76 replied: "I think poetic license is what’s going on there."
Lewis had previously reached out to "the family of Emma Barton" to learn about his biological mother, unaware of the full circumstances of her death. Emma died after Moira Dingle pushed her off a viaduct, a secret Ross has been protecting. When Ross first met his half-brother, he was determined to shield Moira but eventually Lewis discovered the truth, straining their relationship.
Emmerdale airs weeknights at 8pm on ITV1 and streams on ITVX and YouTube from 7am.
