Emmerdale's Caleb and Ruby Miligan (William Ash and Beth Cordingly) are set for more turmoil, as actor William Ash has teased upcoming conflict between the couple following the 'extreme' ordeal that saw Ruby buried alive.
The storyline began when Caleb, embracing his dark side, set out to destroy the life of his half-nephew Joe Tate (Ned Porteous), after Joe employed a corrupt doctor to forcibly steal Caleb's kidney. Caleb used Billy Fletcher (Jay Kontzle) as a pawn to tear apart Joe's relationship with Dawn Taylor (Olivia Bromley), who was about to marry Joe while carrying his baby.
The scheme unravelled when Dawn learned the attack on Billy was not Joe's doing, and she returned to marry Joe. However, Jimmy King (Nick Miles) crashed his car into the wedding marquee, killing himself and leaving Joe and Dawn gravely injured. Dawn delivered a baby boy but later died, and Joe, consumed by vengeance, drugged Caleb and trapped Ruby in a coffin underground while she was still alive.
Ruby's rescue and aftermath
Ruby was saved only after Graham Foster (Andrew Scarborough) influenced Joe to reveal where she was buried, allowing her to be rescued before she suffocated. Speaking exclusively to Metro at the Cure Usher ball, William Ash said: 'I think it's kind of gone as far as it can go now, hasn't it?'
'You never know what the writers have in store, but it was pretty drastic, I think, that end bit. Burying her alive and then not taking her to hospital afterwards – it's a bit extreme.'
Conflict ahead for the couple
Despite the ordeal, Ash teased that things won't be plain sailing between the couple: 'We've got some conflict coming up, I think. It gets a bit dull when everyone's getting on and everybody's having a nice time with each other.'
'Hopefully real life is like that, but with Emmerdale you've got to have the conflict there, and that's the best stuff to play.' The Emmerdale landing page now features a new picture of Caleb and Ruby, signalling they will remain a prominent fixture going forward, though the exact story remains unconfirmed.
