Ellen DeGeneres has confirmed she moved to the UK because of Donald Trump's re-election, stating 'Everything here is just better.' Speaking at Cheltenham's Everyman theatre, her first public appearance since leaving the US, she told broadcaster Richard Bacon that Trump spurred the decision.
DeGeneres and her wife Portia de Rossi arrived in the UK the day before the 2024 US election. Waking to texts with crying emojis, she said: 'He got in. And we’re like, 'We're staying here.'' The couple moved to a house in the Cotswolds after her talkshow ended and a final US comedy tour.
DeGeneres expressed concern over LGBTQ+ rights, noting the Baptist Church's vote to overturn same-sex marriage. She hinted she and de Rossi may remarry in the UK for protection: 'If they do that, we're going to get married here.'
She also addressed the toxic work environment scandal that ended her talkshow in 2022. DeGeneres said she was 'misconstrued' as mean, noting: 'It was certainly an unpleasant way to end.'
