Van Der Beek, who died in February 2026 at age 48 from colorectal cancer, appears posthumously in Episode 3 as Dean Wilson, a school district superintendent with mayoral ambitions. Before the episode's closing credits, a tribute title card reads: "In loving memory of James Van Der Beek."
