EastEnders delivered a dramatic twist on Thursday night as viewers finally learned the truth about Zoe Slater's secret past. During a flashback to 2006, it was revealed that Zoe gave birth to twins, but only one baby survived.
The episode saw the Square rally around Zoe after she was shot, with her ex, Dr Anthony Trueman, stepping in to help. As she lost blood and passed out, she was rushed to hospital, prompting the flashback to her earlier traumatic birth.
In the 2006 scenes, Zoe woke up to find only one baby, a boy, and was told the doctor would speak to her. However, she attempted to leave the hospital, telling a nurse she wanted her son adopted. The nurse expressed concerns about postnatal depression, but Zoe fled, leaving the baby alone and dropping an Ibiza keyring.
Back in the present, Kat Slater sat by Zoe's bedside and asked if she had ever had children. Zoe replied, 'Can't even give birth right,' and Kat asked if the babies had died, just as Zoe passed out. It was later revealed she needed emergency surgery for internal bleeding.
The father of the twins remains unknown, and fans are left wondering if Zoe will survive. EastEnders continues Monday to Thursday at 7:30pm on BBC One and iPlayer.
