EastEnders paid an emotional on-screen tribute to Michael Owen Morris, a director who worked on the soap for 20 years, at the end of Monday's episode (September 28).
As the credits rolled, a statement appeared on screen reading: "In loving memory of Michael Owen Morris 1947 - 2026", accompanied by a photo of the director. The episode was available on BBC iPlayer.
A 20-year career on the Square
Michael joined EastEnders in 2003, directing the episode in which Phil Mitchell's (Steve McFadden) new partner, Kate Morton (Jill Halfpenny), moved into his Albert Square home. Kate was an undercover police officer tasked with extracting a murder confession from Phil.
With more than 200 episodes to his name, Michael stayed at EastEnders until 2019 and worked with multiple executive producers. During that time, he directed the 2004 Pat & Mo special, which revealed the cause of the feud between Pat Butcher (Pam St Clement) and Mo Harris (Laila Morse), a rift that lasted until Pat's death.
Memorable episodes and a return in 2023
Michael also directed the devastating episode where Peggy Mitchell (Barbara Windsor) ended her own life after her terminal breast cancer spread to her brain.
In 2023, under executive producer Chris Clenshaw, Michael returned to helm a special episode that confirmed Cindy Beale (Michelle Collins) was still alive following her 1998 death in prison. Set in France, the installment also exposed Cindy's reunion with her ex-husband, Ian Beale (Adam Woodyatt), and their son, Peter (Thomas Law). Lauren Branning (Jacqueline Jossa) also made a comeback as she joined the Beales in their French home, prompting the family's permanent return to Albert Square.
Other BBC productions
Away from EastEnders, Michael worked on other BBC productions, including Campion, Doctor Who, Vanity Fair (1987), Tenko, Holby City, and Casualty. He also worked on Coronation Street in 1994 and the ITV police drama The Bill.
The tribute followed a heartbreaking EastEnders episode as Denise Fox (Diane Parish) received another devastating blow in her battle with cancer. Earlier this year, Denise was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia, with much of her hope resting on getting a stem cell donor.
Denise's donor search
The search for a donor revealed that Denise had a paternal half-brother she had never met, Darnell Larson Jr. (Christopher Colquhoun), whom she has now met, along with his daughter, Grace (Krysstina Frempong).
On Monday, Denise and her partner, Jack Branning (Scott Maslen), received a surprise visit from Darnell, who was sad to reveal that the tests showed he was not a close enough match for Denise. The news left Denise destroyed and trying to wrap her head around a further round of chemotherapy, which so far hasn't been as successful as desired.
