EastEnders confirms Max and Zoe's fates in new spoilers

New EastEnders spoilers confirm that Max Branning (Jake Wood) survives his collapse on his wedding day, while Zoe Slater (Michelle Ryan) tragically dies after banging her head in a fall. The fallout from both events continues in the next episode.

Max's collapse and recovery

Max collapsed while delivering his wedding speech to Cindy Beale (Michelle Collins), just hours after tying the knot. It seemed as though he was about to call things off with Cindy in favour of a potential future with Linda Carter (Kellie Bright), who had declared her love for him the night before.

Linda was appalled to learn of Max's affair with Priya Nandra-Hart (Sophie Khan Levy) and resolved to expose it, but she did not go through with her plan. She made clear that Max missed the boat with her after he put a ring on Cindy's finger.

Everyone rushes towards Max in the wake of his collapse. A flash-forward episode earlier in the year confirmed he is alive come New Year's Day and set to get married again, so he pulls through. The exact cause of his collapse, possibly a heart attack due to stress, remains unclear, and who he will choose to be with when he wakes up is yet to be revealed.

Zoe's tragic death

Kat Slater (Jesse Wallace) is left in shock to discover that Zoe made off with Charlie's stolen cab, and the situation escalates when the seller arrives. With Zoe facing prison, Alfie (Shane Richie) and Kat find the funds to pay him off.

An argument erupts between Kat and Zoe, just as Kat attempts to put on a brave face before Kim (Tameka Empson) and Howie's (Delroy Atkinson) wedding congregation arrive. Zoe banged her head after a fall, and upcoming scenes will see her tragically die, with Kat finding her body.

Other developments

The Hawkins continue to settle into the Square, with Ned (Jamie Bamber) and Gemma (Patricia Potter) attempting to acquaint themselves with Phil (Steve McFadden) and Sharon (Letitia Dean). The moment is interrupted when Kim reveals all about Jodie (Anna Constable) and Ryder's (Felix Urr) behaviour at the community centre.

EastEnders airs these scenes Wednesday September 9 at 7:30pm on BBC One or streams from 6am on BBC iPlayer.
