BBC has released new artwork hinting at major events in Max Branning's future ahead of EastEnders' New Year's Day flashforward to 2027. The image shows Max in a wedding suit with a blood-splattered rose on his lapel, while his son Oscar screams and Lauren cries behind him. The flashforward, airing on 1 January at 19:30 without early iPlayer release, will depict Max preparing for his wedding a year from now. The sonogram and Rolls Royce suggest ties to Max's romantic entanglements, while the SWAT officer raises questions about what could bring such police presence to Walford.
The blood on Max's rose hints at potential violence, echoing his history of attempted murder. In 2017, Max forced Steven Beale to start a fire to kill Jane Beale, leading to Steven's death after a confrontation. Later that year, he tried to strangle Ian Beale and kill Phil Mitchell, stopped only by Lauren and Stacey.
Max has also been linked to other deaths: he helped cover up Stacey Slater's murder of Archie Mitchell in 2009, letting his son Bradley take the blame, and in 2012, he and family members let Derek Branning die of a heart attack without intervening.
The flashforward promises to reveal which of these dark threads will resurface, as Max's past catches up with him in 2027.
