The DIY SOS team was moved to tears during Tuesday's (October 20) episode as they helped a North Wales family whose home renovation had stalled, leaving them living on a building site with two young sons.
Nick Knowles and the team arrived in Llanberis to assist parents Helen and Llyr. Their eldest son Macsen, aged two, has a rare genetic condition called Kabuki syndrome, and their youngest Ffredi is just weeks old. The unfinished building work was causing problems for the children's health.
A Family's Struggle
The BBC synopsis teased: "With their home no longer meeting the family's needs and no way of completing the work themselves, the team steps in to create a safe, accessible home where Macsen can thrive and the whole family can look to the future with confidence."
The episode explored the family's story, including the moment renovations came to a halt when they discovered they were pregnant with their first son. Helen was rushed into theatre five weeks before her due date. Llyr recalled being told doctors would do all they could to save their baby, adding: "It's when we knew this is really serious." Macsen was born with serious complications and needed open heart surgery at 10 days old.
Emotional Moments
Helen told Nick she wanted their house to be more accessible, admitting: "It's been quite difficult for us to think that far ahead." Llyr was also seen in tears, telling Nick: "We can't relax ever at the minute. It's just always so much to do. All this work now I'm doing myself."
Nick admitted the challenge was significant, saying: "Logistically I should walk away from this one, doing this in a house with no access..." He continued: "There's no choice we can't say no... it's a challenge in December in North Wales... it's got to be done though hasn't it."
Community Support
When the team of workers arrived, they were met with a heartwarming message from Helen and Llyr. Helen said: "Llyr and I realised we're incredibly lucky to be part of a very special community in North Wales. When we had Macsen that same community instantly scrambled and drive four hours down the motorway every week to deliver us food parcels while we were living in hospital with him."
Fighting back tears, she added: "Most of you don't even know us and you've turned up for the week to graft out of the kindness of your heart. That graft is going to change ours and the boys' lives forever. This house will finally provide a place of solace, relaxation and joy during the challenges that lie ahead." The team were then seen in tears as Llyr told them their boy had "been through so much" in his young life.
The episode follows news that the programme would be 'paused'. One viewer wrote on X: "I'm late starting @DIYSOS..... but less than 10 mins in, I'm gone." Another stated: "Such a shame @bbc is axing #diysos. The show is so heart warming and emotional, shows the best side of people and really changes people's lives for the better. Why would you axe this?" DIY SOS is available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
