Fans of the sun-soaked BBC crime drama Death in Paradise have received a major update about the future of a beloved character, directly from the show's newest detective.
Commissioner's Surprise Comeback Confirmed
Following his dramatic exit at the end of series 14, where he was stripped of his title and left Saint Marie, Commissioner Selwyn Patterson (played by Don Warrington) made unexpected appearances in the recent Christmas specials for both Death in Paradise and its spin-off, Beyond Paradise.
The BBC has now officially confirmed that the cherished character will be returning to the island for the upcoming series 15. This news was warmly received by viewers who had feared his departure was permanent.
New Detective Mervin Wilson Shares Update
The programme's principal detective, Mervin Wilson, portrayed by actor Don Gilet, has personally addressed the Commissioner's return. Taking to social media, Gilet shared an image featuring both his character and the Commissioner.
"Thank you for the kind words regarding #DeathInParadise Xmas Spesh," he wrote. "See you in 2026 for more drama from Saint Marie." This post, reported by the Express, serves as a direct teaser for the new series set to air next year.
Fan Reaction to the Major Series Update
Supporters of the long-running series swiftly flocked to the comments to express their delight at the confirmation of Selwyn Patterson's comeback.
One fan commented, "Was so looking forward to this and it did not disappoint. Glad Commissioner Patterson is considering redoing his old job role... Roll on the new series."
Another simply stated, "I thought we'd lost you. So glad we haven't," while a third emphatically declared, "So happy to see you back! You can never leave the show!"
The show's official Instagram also teased the return, posting footage of the Commissioner with the caption: "So that's something to look forward to in the new year!"
In the Beyond Paradise special, the Commissioner himself hinted at his desire to return, telling the Chief Commissioner, "I have been doing some thinking, and I wondered if there was any chance of my returning to the role if it's still vacant."
Death in Paradise is available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
