Death in Paradise is revisiting Kris Marshall's farewell as DI Humphrey Goodman with a watch-along of two classic episodes. The BBC drama's Instagram account announced the event, featuring series six, episodes five and six, with Marshall alongside Josephine Jobert as DS Florence Cassell.
Classic episodes return
These are existing episodes rather than a newly filmed return for the detective, who now leads spin-off Beyond Paradise. The announcement prompted an enthusiastic response from viewers who still have a soft spot for Humphrey.
One wrote: "Humphrey was truly the best. I adore them all, but he was really the best and I'm so glad he got his own show. Kris Marshall is a great actor! Hopefully, the entire franchise, all three shows, will continue for quite a long time because they are all phenomenal!"
Someone else added, "Kris was great, but so was Josephine. She went through three different DI’s, all with their own quirks and personalities. She developed her Florence character as Florence had to adapt. Very good work."
The London adventure
The London adventure begins with the suspicious death of a sailing boat captain. Although the boat's boom appears to have killed him, Humphrey believes there is more to the case, with the clues pointing towards suspects who head back to the UK.
Following them takes the team away from the Caribbean sunshine and into an unfamiliar investigation in London. Matters become more complicated when their prime suspect is also murdered, leaving the detectives with two connected deaths to unravel.
Humphrey's farewell and beyond
For Kris, the storyline marked the end of a four-series run on Death in Paradise, having played Humphrey from 2014 to 2017. His character's departure was driven by love: rather than return to the island, Humphrey chose to stay in London to pursue a future with Martha.
That farewell was not the end of their story. Kris returned to the role for Beyond Paradise, which launched in 2023, with Sally also reprising her part as Martha.
The spin-off follows the couple's life in the fictional Devon town of Shipton Abbott, where Humphrey joins the local police team. His distinctive approach to solving cases remains central to the drama, alongside his relationship with Martha and their efforts to build a life together.
While the original series sent Humphrey from London to the Caribbean, Beyond Paradise gives him a different setting and a fresh set of mysteries in south-west England.
The cast have been photographed filming the forthcoming series in Devon and Cornwall, giving fans more of Humphrey's story to look forward to beyond this nostalgic watch-along.
Death in Paradise will return to BBC iPlayer on Thursday.
