Rare footage of David Bowie performing 'Heroes' at Earl’s Court in 1978 will be shown in a new immersive exhibition in London. The performance, considered a 'holy grail' by fans, has been pieced together from newly discovered camera angles in the artist’s archives.
The exhibition, titled You’re Not Alone, opens in April at Lightroom in King’s Cross. It will also include Bowie’s final performance as Ziggy Stardust at the Hammersmith Odeon in 1973. The immersive space uses projections on all walls and floor, with spatial sound, to place visitors inside the performances.
Co-director Mark Grimmer, who also worked on the 2013 V&A show David Bowie Is, said the quality of the material is amazing and Bowie was at the height of his powers. The show is narrated by Bowie himself using interviews that comment on his creative life.
The exhibition is divided into seven non-chronological chapters, drawing from the 90,000-item Bowie archive. Elements such as stage models for the Diamond Dogs tours are used to create digital renderings. Grimmer noted that Bowie kept everything, knowing someone would look through it.
Key themes explored include spirituality, transience, and mortality, which were important to Bowie throughout his life. The hour-long show is the fifth at Lightroom, which previously hosted exhibitions on David Hockney and Vogue.
