The final episode of River City airs tonight (August 31) at 9pm on BBC Scotland and BBC iPlayer, bringing an end to the Scottish soap after 24 years. Ahead of the grand finale, actor Darren Brownlie, who plays Michael Duffy, shared what the show was truly about, highlighting its focus on communication and community.
A message about talking and community
Speaking on STV Radio, Brownlie said he hopes viewers will hold on to the sense of community the show highlighted even after it ends. He said: "What River City had was that it's to talk. To talk things out, to communicate. If you're feeling a certain way, tell someone. If something happens to you, don't keep it to yourself."
He added: "Deal with it by talking to people. In that sense, there's a community that everyone had and it's to kinda hold onto that." Brownlie explained that viewers see themselves on screen and watch problems get resolved, but the real message is to encourage people to "carry on opening up and talk about the things that get in the way of life."
An explosive finale for Shieldinch
The hour-long finale promises an explosive exit for the fictional Glasgow district. First-look images show a dramatic fire scene and a bloody Lenny Murdoch, played by Frank Gallagher. The BBC synopsis reads: "In the eagerly anticipated finale, Lenny and Harry's (Jim Sturgeon) bitter rivalry leads to an intense showdown; love and marriage is key for some Shieldinch residents; while new beginnings beckon at The Tall Ship."
The last episode was reportedly shot in April 2026 at the now-demolished set in Dumbarton. The decision to end River City was announced in March 2025, with the broadcaster citing a shift in audience behaviour away from long-running series towards shorter runs.
Fan reaction and the end of an era
The BBC announcement read: "After over 20 years telling the stories of the characters who live and work in Shieldinch, we're sorry to bring you the sad news that River City will come to an end in September 2026. We are thankful to our amazing viewers, fans, cast, crew, writers, and producers who are all a valued part of the River City community."
Since the release of the series finale teaser, fans have shared their disappointment on social media. One person wrote on X: "Worst decision ever to end this. It's the best programme with great characters." Another added: "Absolute crime it's ending. Very beloved series even after all this time. Not much else left on BBC Scotland without it, just endless 20 year old repeats." The final episode of River City airs at 9pm on BBC Scotland and BBC iPlayer.
